Essentials of Polyvagal Theory

About

This course offers a practical, text-based introduction to Polyvagal Theory and its application to understanding nervous system regulation. It is designed for individuals who prefer depth over speed, and clarity over simplification, providing a structured and reflective learning experience rather than a highly visual or fast-paced format. You will explore the three primary states of the autonomic nervous system, ventral vagal (linked to safety, connection, and social engagement), sympathetic (mobilisation, including fight-or-flight responses), and dorsal vagal (shutdown, withdrawal, and conservation of energy). The course moves beyond theory alone, helping you recognise how these states are experienced in everyday life and how they shape behaviour, perception, and interaction with others. The program also introduces the biological foundations of the vagus nerve and the concept of neuroception, the nervous system’s automatic and unconscious process of detecting safety or threat. Through this lens, you will begin to understand why reactions often occur outside of conscious control, and how physiological patterns develop over time. A key focus of the course is developing awareness without judgment. You will learn how to identify your own nervous system patterns, track shifts in state, and recognise early signs of dysregulation. Alongside this, the course provides simple, accessible strategies to support internal safety and greater regulation in daily life. As a text-rich course, it is intentionally designed to allow space for reflection, re-reading, and gradual integration. It is particularly suited to those who value a thoughtful, self-paced approach and want to build a solid conceptual foundation before moving into more applied or experiential work.
